Alternative Treatment vs Established Treatment

The 3 conventional healthcare management goals of hemorrhoid treatment include alleviating the symptoms, arresting the worsening of the condition and preventing the recurrence of the condition. On top of these goals, we would include pre-emptive prevention of the onset of hemorrhoids.

In traditional medical circles, there are 4 stages of assessment; immediate admittance to hospital where malignancy is suspected, possible admittance where there is acute pain (e.g. thrombosed external hemorrhoids and thrombosed prolapsed internal hemorrhoids), outpatient treatment (e.g. grades 1 or 2 hemorrhoids); intensive investigation (e.g. where more than the typical symptoms of hemorrhoids are evident).

The majority of people typically are comfortable choosing this conventional route of hemorrhoid treatment. That is fine, especially if it has been of relief to them. As we believe that they typically do provide good medical care, we are not total skeptics of big pharmaceutical companies and hospitals. However, mainline medicines often have side effects that we may not be alerted to even by the best of doctors as they truly believe that the cure is the main immediate goal.

Therefore, our approach is always to examine alternative treatment together with conventional medicine. This is especially so if the alternative method has these characteristics; is natural, has been tried and tested by fellow sufferers and is effective even for those who have undergone conventional healthcare treatment. One such alternative to hemorrhoid treatment is the H Miracle.

Apart from conventional and alternative treatment, there are many things that you can do for yourself to avoid becoming a hemorrhoid sufferer or if you are already one, to alleviate your discomfort and prevent a worsening of the condition.

Healthy Lifestyle as a Habit

Adopt this simple style of living – the balanced diet! An undeniable truth, though clichéd it may sound.

Excessive straining due to constipation, something which most of us simply dismiss as part of life, is a major cause of piles. Accordingly, a critical lifestyle objective should then be to ensure regular bowel movements comprising bulky and soft faeces. With some effort, this can be accomplished simply by including in our daily diet t least 30 gm of insoluble fiber found in fruits and leafy vegetables. Add to that 8 glasses of fluids. Fluids, despite our optimism, do not include those with alcohol and caffeine content!

The balanced diet normally works fairly quickly. But if your bowel demands are very urgent, you may also take plant-based fiber supplements. Methyl cellulose (sold under trade names like Citrucel or WillPowder) is highly effective. It passes through the intestines undigested and absorbs large quantities of water to produce a bulkier but softer stool. Another high fiber supplement is psyllium (sold under the brand Metamucil) which acts similarly to smoothen bowel motion.

Whether you are already afflicted with hemorrhoids or is recovering from hemorrhoids after normal medical procedures, the daily objective of a well-balanced diet is an imperative step in your hemorrhoid treatment and recovery.

Helping Yourself at Home

If you are already in pain from hemorrhoids, the following set of drills for perianal hygiene should become a personal habit. Perianal refers to the tissues in the vicinity of the anus. After passing motion, these are essential steps to note:

• Avoid soaps with perfumes or dyes

• Do not rub the anal region

– clean with the shower or bidet

– gently pat dry with a towel

• Blot dry the anus with

– damp toilet paper

– baby wipes

– pre-moistened mini-towels e.g. TUCKS Medicated Pads

– cleansing agents e.g. Balneol Hygienic Cleansing Lotion.

For itch and pain relief in hemorrhoid treatment, try one or all of the following:

• Apply ice (10-minute duration) several times a day

• Alternately apply a warm compress (10-20 minute duration)

• Apply moist heat (using warm towels – tip: use a microwave) a few times a day

• Soak the anal area in warm water (15 minute duration) several times a day

• Take a sitz bath (i.e. warm tub of water with a tablespoon of salt added)

• Apply hemorrhoidal creams or petroleum jelly (e.g. Preparation H)

Other relief methods:

• Rest in bed – relieves pressure on the inflamed hemorrhoids

• Refrain standing or sitting for prolonged periods

• Refrain lifting heavy things

• Wear loose cotton undergarments to minimise moisture formation

• Do NOT use the famed doughnut ring cushion – by restricting blood flow, it magnifies swelling!

• Diligently exercise – if nothing else, just brisk walking

• No matter how busy you are, empty your bowels as soon as the urge occurs.

Self-help is an inevitable part of hemorrhoid treatment. But it is VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE that whenever any of the medicinal products mentioned above are used for hemorrhoid relief, you should always consult the pharmacist at the drugstore where you make your purchase or your personal doctor. This is especially if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, diabetes, urination difficulties caused by prostate gland enlargement or you are recently taking any prescription drugs.
